Quinta de Gomariz: Freshness with Focus
Spring has sprung, so this month we are diving into the heart of Vinho Verde to showcase a maker quietly expanding what the region is known for. Quinta de Gomariz, based in the lush Vale do Ave, brings clarity, care, and structure to wines often celebrated for their lightness—but here, they speak with more depth.
Set across 17 hectares of loam soils, kissed by Atlantic breezes and shaped by granite hills, Gomariz produces wines that are crisp, bright, and full of natural character. From citrus-led whites to delicate rosé, every bottle speaks of soil, climate, and craft.
The Land, it’s People, their Vision
The estate sits between Porto and Braga, in one of the most prized terroirs of northern Portugal. This patch of Vinho Verde is known for its excellent sun exposure, natural drainage, and cool ocean influence—a perfect combination for growing native grapes like Avesso, Loureiro, Alvarinho, and Espadeiro.
Behind the wines are two Antónios: António Sousa, the estate’s founder, and another António, the maker of the wines—longtime collaborators with a shared respect for traditional methods and a desire to elevate native varieties.
“From the start, my boss felt a deep connection to the land and to wine,” said Vitoria, a member of the Gomariz team. “His friendship with António the turned that interest into full commitment. Together, they’ve shaped the vision we have today.”
They set out to produce single-varietal wines, going against the regional grain where blends are common – we do love a rebel at Port O’Bristol, after all!

Harvest at Gomariz: Rhythm and Intuition
Harvest begins early. Days start before sunrise. Hands work fast but carefully. “There’s an energy in the vineyard,” Vitoria says. “You hear laughter mixed with focus. Everyone moves with purpose—it’s hard work, but it’s joyful.”
Every bunch is picked by hand, and that care continues in the estate. Gomariz ferments with minimal interference, uses low sulphur, and allows each grape to show its true character. Sustainability guides the entire process—from vineyard practices to packaging.
“Sustainability here is about daily decisions. It’s a balance—protecting the vines, the environment, and the future.”
Avesso: The Estate’s Signature Grape
Gomariz champions Avesso, a grape that deserves more love. Known for its balance of freshness and structure, Avesso brings a subtle richness and mineral lift that’s rare in Vinho Verde wines.
“It has a fresh, salty side, but also body and texture. It surprises people—and we love that.”
Gomariz’s Avesso won Best of the Best Vinho Verde 2020. It continues to be one of their proudest expressions, anchoring many of their most compelling bottles.
Pick Of The Month
The Port O’Bristol team worked closely with the Gomariz team to create Thetis Branco—a clean, focused white wine that captures the best of their approach. Crafted from a blend that includes their signature grape, Avesso, it opens with grapefruit zest, green apple, and citrus blossom, finishing dry and mineral, with a quiet complexity that unfolds over time.
“We wanted something that reflects the land it came from. Pure, precise, and bright.”
Thetis is built for long spring lunches, chilled evenings, and quiet celebrations.
It pairs perfectly with:
Grilled Sardines or Seabass with Olive Oil
Goat Cheese with lemon-dressed greens
Vietnamese rice rolls with mint and pickled veg
Antipasti on a sunny blanket in the park
Wines That Mean Something
Quinta de Gomariz doesn’t follow trends. They follow the rhythm of their vineyards, the potential of their grapes, and the purpose that brought them here. Their wines are honest. Their choices are intentional. And their bottles speak softly—but carry real weight.
This is Vinho Verde with clarity. With confidence. With just the right amount of rebellion. Now go, and enjoy like a Hero!
