Monthly Wine Maker Showcase – Quinta Do Ferro

Winemaker Showcase: Portugal’s Sparkling Star

Introducing Micaela Fonseca of Quinta Do Ferro. She’s earned the title Sparkling Queen of Portugal—and for good reason. Her wines set the standard for fizz, proving that Vinho Verde, home to some of the world’s best still wines, has a lot more bubbling beneath the surface. Quinta Do Ferro holds a formidable spot in our arsenal of incredible wines, and Micaela is exactly the kind of rebel winemaker we love at Port O’Bristol—someone who challenges expectations, makes outstanding wine, and does it all with sustainability at the core.

When Pirates Meet Rebels

Port O’Bristol’s paths crossed with Quinta do Ferro over a decade ago. Lela McTernan, a director and co-founder here, first met Micaela at Essência do Vinho in Porto, one of Portugal’s biggest wine shows. It was a male-dominated environment, but Micaela made sure Lela had a seat at the table. She welcomed her in, introduced her to the right people, and made sure she was part of the conversation.

They’ve been firm friends ever since, with Micaela inviting Port O’Bristol to visit the winery in Minho. That’s where they met the passionate team behind Quinta do Ferro, walked the vineyards, and sampled the fresh walnuts they also farm—insanely delicious, another reflection of how deeply this land is cared for. Since Port O’Bristol met Micaela, it was clear she wasn’t just making brilliant wine. She was exactly the kind of partner Port O’Bristol wanted: a winemaker with a mission, a challenger of norms, and a firm believer in sustainability.

From Architecture to Winemaking

Micaela didn’t start in wine. She originally trained as an Architect, however the allure of her family winery was too hard a pull to resist. In 2011, she took over Quinta do Ferro, her family’s winery in Vinho Verde – and the rest is history!

Tucked into the steep, mountainous landscape on the right bank of the Douro River, Quinta do Ferro isn’t situated in a spot known for being an easy place to grow grapes. But that’s exactly what makes these wines so special. The tough terrain and cooler climate mean slow-ripening fruit packed with character, perfect for crisp, complex sparkling wines.

Rebels With a Cause

Micaela isn’t just making world-class fizz; she’s doing it with purpose. Hand-harvested grapes, traditional methods, and a deep respect for the land are at the heart of her process. Sustainability isn’t a buzzword here—it’s built into the very DNA of Quinta do Ferro.

Micaela is also the founder of the ‘Women in Wine’ event in Portugal, a movement dedicated to amplifying female voices in an industry that’s still very male-dominated. This initiative brings together women winemakers, producers, and experts from across Portugal (and further afield), creating a space to share knowledge, support each other, and push for positive change.

At Port O’Bristol, we believe rebels should set the stage for a better future – and Micaela is smashing it!

A Terroir Built for Sparkling

The wines of Quinta do Ferro owe their brilliance to Micaela and her family’s labour of love, but also to the land they come from. Avesso, the star grape, is crisp and aromatic, with grapefruit and peach notes. Arinto, Portugal’s finest white variety, adds a bright, zesty edge, while Vinhão brings depth and intrigue.

Micaela crafts her wines from these grapes using the traditional method (the same as Champagne!). The result? Elegant, refined bubbles that have caught the attention of critics like Robert Parker and Sarah Ahmed – this is serious stuff, and certainly not to be missed!

Micaela’s Pick:

Quinta Do Ferro sparkling is always best to share with friends as an aperitif on any occasion or get together event, and Micaela’s favourite would be the Reserva Bruto.

It pairs perfectly with:

  • Tapas
  • cheese
  • Ice Cream
  • Cakes & Pastries

Don’t skip this wine, it’s certainly not to be missed!

Quinta do Ferro is proof that world-class sparkling wines don’t just come from Champagne. They come from rebels who challenge tradition and take the hard (road—sometimes literally!)—to create something remarkable. That’s exactly what you get with Quinta Do Ferro! Don’t just take our word for it though, seriously, you won’t regret it!
